The VDA is proposing a new law that will prohibit your insurer from negotiating discounts for services that YOU, the patient, pay for out of YOUR own pocket. This new law won't affect your medical or dental insurance premiums, but it could mean you'll PAY MORE the next time you visit your dentist's office.
The VDA says that it wants to prevent insurance carriers from negotiating discounts for "non-covered" services. They mean services that YOU, the patient, pay for directly. You may not know it, but you now receive a discount off FULL RETAIL CHARGES for many dental services. If the legislation passes, these discounts will disappear, and you'll pay more, especially seniors who typically use more dental services or visit their dentists more frequently.
The VDA's 3000 member dentists and oral surgeons receive the benefit of price discounts for products and services they purchase through the VDA's affiliated service company. The new law would prohibit YOU, the patient, from receiving the benefit of price discounts from YOUR medical or dental carrier for services that YOU pay the dentist for directly. They want to have their cake and eat it too!!
